Lady's Dress Collars and Cuffs c. 1857-1860

c.1857-1860

Collars, cuffs and undersleeves in the wardrobe of the nineteenth century woman were as common and important as corsets and chemises; and with few exceptions, white in color. They were actually a part of a lady's underwear, in that their purpose (besides being a 'finishing touch'on a gown) was to protect the neck of the bodice from the dirt and oils of the body. They were whip stitched to the neck edge so they could easily be removed to be laundered, starched and reattached.

These patterns-five collars and three cuffs- were taken from extant pattern books and ladies' magazines of the period.

The pattern is available in one size ranges.
